Why
Every kid knows the house you skip.
I was out trick or treating with my kids when I remembered the feeling. You stand at the end of a dark walk looking at a house with the lights low, and you cannot tell if anyone is home. So you skip it.
Sometimes that house is a senior who would love nothing more than to be part of Halloween but cannot get up a ladder to hang decorations. Sometimes it is somebody who just wants to be left alone. Either way nobody knows, and everybody loses a little.
It is worse in an apartment. A hallway of forty identical doors gives a kid nothing at all to go on. There is no porch light to read.
A Pumpkin Heart says the same thing to every kid who walks past. We are home. We have candy. Come on up.
Glowing warm from the first of October to the last night of the month.
